Eddie and Arlene have DJ’d and MC’d wedding receptions at The Old Post Office in downtown Evansville — a landmark 1870s federal building with a grand columned hall for dinner, toasts and dancing. The Venue

About The Old Post Office

The Old Post Office Event Center is Evansville’s former U.S. Post Office and Customs House, built in the late 1870s and now a downtown event venue. What we saw working there:

  • One long, grand hall with high ceilings, rows of dark columns and tall arched windows down the walls
  • Stone floors with an open central floor for dancing, and round tables set along the sides
  • Draped fabric and string lights over the head table, and a room that takes colored uplighting beautifully on the arches and columns
  • An ornate stone exterior with a wide front stairway that couples use for wedding-party photos

What We Learned Working Here

The Old Post Office is a long, tall hall rather than a square room, and that shapes the evening. Dinner, toasts and dancing all happen in the same space, so the room has to change moods on cue. Here is what mattered most from where we stood.

  • Stone floors, high ceilings and a long room mean announcements need to be clear, steady and unhurried so they carry the length of the hall instead of blurring into it
  • For introductions and toasts, we position the microphone so attention stays centered near the head table and dance floor and guests throughout the long room can follow what’s happening
  • We keep dinner and toast volume comfortable and clear in this room, then build the sound when the dance floor opens
  • The open central floor between the columns is the natural dance floor, and guests gather along its edges rather than drifting to the far end
  • With the house lights down and uplighting on the arches, the hall feels intimate rather than cavernous, and open dancing worked well once it began
  • The architecture does a lot of the work here — a few well-placed lights and the room already looks like the photos couples come in hoping for

Reception & Sound

The hall at The Old Post Office is one long open space with the head table at one end and guest tables down the sides. Sound here is about the guest experience: people should be able to talk over dinner, understand every toast, and feel the energy lift when the dancing starts. In a long stone-floored room, we keep dinner and toast volume comfortable and clear, then build the sound when the dance floor opens.

  • Announcements that carry the length of the hall without sounding shouted
  • Dinner music kept under the conversation in a stone-floored room
  • Toasts guests can follow from the far tables — the microphone ready for the right person
  • Fuller sound and lighting when the dance floor opens

Introductions, Toasts & Dancing

At The Old Post Office the formal part of the evening and the party share one hall, so the hand-off between them matters. Arlene runs the introductions and keeps the timeline moving; Eddie reads the room and builds the music to get people onto the floor and keep them there.
