The Venue

About Discovery Lodge

Discovery Lodge — formally the O’Day Discovery Lodge at Burdette Park — is a lodge-style event hall on Evansville’s west side. What we saw working there:

  • One large, open lodge room with log walls, a high vaulted wood ceiling and heavy timber beams
  • A tall stone fireplace column at one end of the room that becomes the natural focal point for a ceremony or head table
  • Big windows and string lights overhead, with black-linen tables set around an open floor
  • A room that takes uplighting well — warm amber or colored light on the logs and stone changes the whole feel after dark

What We Learned Working Here

Discovery Lodge is one big room, and that is its strength. Ceremony, dinner, toasts and dancing can all happen in the same space, so the day flows without a walk between buildings — but it also means the room has to change character several times in one evening. Here is what mattered most from where we stood.

  • The lodge is large and tall, with log walls and a vaulted ceiling; announcements need to be clear, steady and unhurried so the far tables understand every word
  • When the ceremony is held inside at the fireplace end, guests sit in rows in the same room where dinner follows, so a wireless microphone on the officiant is what carries vows and readings to the back rows
  • Because the room does everything, timing matters: music to fill the turnover after the ceremony, then dinner music at a level people can talk over
  • The open floor in front of the fireplace or head table becomes the dance floor, with tables close around it, which keeps guests part of the action instead of across the room
  • With the house lights down and uplighting on the logs and stone, the big room feels warm rather than cavernous, and open dancing worked well once it began
  • Overhead string lights and colored lighting show up beautifully in this room, so the after-dark look is part of the plan, not an afterthought

At Discovery Lodge the ceremony can be held right in the lodge, with the stone fireplace as the backdrop and guests seated in rows across the room. It is a beautiful setting, and in a room this size nothing carries on its own. We treat the ceremony as its own event with its own sound, so the moments that matter most are heard, not just seen.

  • Processional, bride’s entrance and recessional music cued exactly when you want them
  • Ceremony sound placed for the seating, then the room turned for dinner and dancing
  • Wireless microphones for the officiant, readings and vows
  • Sound set at a level that reaches the back rows without overpowering the setting

Dinner & Announcements

Reception & Sound

The lodge room is one large open space with a high beamed ceiling, and the head table and guest tables set around the open floor. Sound here is about the guest experience: people should be able to talk over dinner, understand every toast, and feel the energy lift when the dancing starts.

  • Announcements that reach the back of the lodge clearly instead of bouncing off the logs
  • Dinner music that stays under the conversation, even in a room this big
  • Toasts guests can actually hear — a wireless microphone in the right hands at the right moment
  • Sound and lighting that step up together when the dancing starts

We don’t talk gear with couples. The best wedding sound is the kind nobody notices.

From Formalities to the Floor

Introductions, Toasts & Dancing

At Discovery Lodge the formal part of the evening and the party share one room, so the hand-off between them matters. Arlene runs the introductions and keeps the timeline moving; Eddie reads the room and builds the music to get people onto the floor and keep them there.

  • Wedding-party and couple introductions with the names pronounced right and the energy matched to the couple
  • Toasts in the order you choose, with the microphone ready and the room quiet
  • First dance and parent dances, then an open floor while the moment is still warm
  • Music built from your must-plays and your do-not-plays, adjusted live to the crowd

Before the Big Day

Planning Notes for a Discovery Lodge Wedding

These are the things we work out with every couple before the wedding. They are Our First Dance planning items — not Discovery Lodge or Burdette Park policies, which the venue will cover with you directly.

  • Ceremony music: processional, entrance, recessional and any readings that need a microphone

  • Timeline coordination with your photographer, caterer and venue contact

The people you plan with are the people who show up — Eddie and Arlene plan your wedding with you and are the two people who arrive on the day.
